Start with the feeling you want
Before comparing villas, describe the day you want to have. Do you imagine stepping directly onto sand, floating above a lagoon, or moving between a shaded garden and the sea? A beach villa can offer a more grounded experience; an overwater villa brings a different relationship with light and water. Neither category is automatically more private.
Treat the transfer as part of the stay
Ask for the complete arrival plan before committing to flights. In the Maldives, an island may require a speedboat, seaplane or domestic connection. In Bora Bora, a domestic flight is usually followed by a boat. Confirm luggage arrangements, waiting time, operating hours and what happens if an international flight is delayed.
Look beyond the floor area
Request a floor plan and the location of the exact accommodation category. Ask where the terrace faces, whether neighbouring decks overlook it, how close it is to shared facilities and whether the pool is shaded. For families or guests with limited mobility, steps and direct water access deserve particular attention.
Make inclusions explicit
Compare the complete stay rather than the headline room rate. Transfers, meal plans, premium drinks, excursions, service charges and taxes can follow different rules. Ask for a written breakdown, cancellation terms and the policy for unused inclusions. A generous-sounding package is only useful when it matches how you travel.
Choose the water as carefully as the room
A lagoon is an environment, not a swimming pool. Clarify beach entry, currents, reef access and guided activity options with the operator. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. Leave room in your plans for weather, and choose responsible encounters that respect the marine environment.
